Solo Trip to the Bahamas: My First Solo Birthday Getaway to Nassau

For my 30th birthday in 2022, I decided I was done waiting. I was tired of making plans with friends only for them to get canceled, and I was tired of hoping someone else would make my birthday special. That year, I made a promise to myself to celebrate me, which is exactly why I packed my bags for a solo trip to the Bahamas!

So, I did exactly that. 

I already had my passport. I started researching the Bahamas, reading reviews, comparing where I wanted to stay, looking into activities, and figuring out how I would safely get around by myself. I booked my own trip, arranged my transportation, planned my tours, packed my bags, and took my first solo international trip to Nassau, Bahamas to celebrate turning 30. 

Looking back, that decision became so much more than a birthday vacation. 

How My Love For Travel Started

My solo trip to the Bahamas made me think about how many years I had spent putting off traveling because I was waiting for someone to come with me. There were places I wanted to see and experiences I wanted to have, but somehow I had convinced myself that I needed another person beside me to do them. 

I didn’t. 

That realization was probably one of the most important things I brought home from Nassau. I learned that I could plan the trip myself, get on the plane myself, navigate another country, sit down for a meal alone, explore, meet people, make memories, and genuinely enjoy my own company. 

Of course, traveling solo came with some uncomfortable moments too, especially as a woman exploring Nassau alone. I’ll get into those experiences and the safety precautions I learned along the way. But overall, taking that first trip changed the way I looked at travel. 

I stopped waiting for someone else to be ready to live the life I wanted to live. 

And that’s how my 30th birthday became my first solo birthday getaway to Nassau and the trip that finally gave me the confidence to travel on my own. 

My Stay at Hotel Riu Palace Paradise Island 

The resort was filled with couples and groups of friends, but honestly, I never felt lonely. Everyone was so friendly, and the staff were genuinely welcoming. Although the men in the Bahamas, along with some of the hotel staff, were quite flirtatious, I didn’t feel unsafe at any point. That was until I had an odd experience on the beach. A gentleman staying at the resort approached me and asked if I was also staying there. He even went so far as to ask what floor I was on. I was completely stunned and immediately recorded the exchange. After a brief conversation, I was able to politely get him to leave. 

One of the highlights of staying at the resort happened as soon as I checked in. Since I was there celebrating my birthday, the hotel upgraded my room and even gave me a complimentary drink. It was such a thoughtful welcome and definitely helped kick off my birthday trip on a good note! 

I really enjoyed having an adults-only resort as my home base. It gave me somewhere comfortable to come back to after spending the day exploring Nassau. 

While there were plenty of couples and groups around me, I honestly didn’t feel like I was missing out by being alone. I was there for myself, and I was perfectly happy enjoying the resort, getting dressed up, eating, having drinks and deciding what I wanted to do each day. 

Planning My First Solo Trip to Bahamas

I was proud to have planned and booked everything myself for this solo trip to the Bahamas. From airport transfers to activities, I handled it all! I booked a walking food tour and another van tour, both through Viator. I also made sure to arrange my cab service ahead of time for smooth airport pickups and drop-offs. I did have one experience with a driver who I wouldn’t book again. Although nothing about his service was overtly wrong, his flirtation was uncomfortable and off-putting. 

Because this was my first solo trip, I wanted to have as much planned ahead of time as possible. I didn’t want to arrive in another country and then try to figure out transportation and activities at the last minute. 

Having my airport transportation arranged ahead of time gave me peace of mind, especially because I was traveling alone. 

Getting Around Nassau 

For my transportation, I used Let’s Go Bahamas Taxi Service. 

My driver was a woman named Franklin, who was a native Bahamian. I really appreciated having a female local driver because she wasn’t just taking me where I needed to go. She also gave me plenty of tips, recommendations and insight about the area. 

She was prompt, professional and helpful, which made getting around much easier. 

If you decide to use Let’s Go Bahamas Taxi Service, ask for Franklin. Having a local who knows the area and is willing to give you recommendations can make a huge difference, especially when you’re traveling somewhere for the first time. 

I definitely recommend arranging transportation ahead of time if you’re traveling solo. It made my arrival and departure much less stressful because I already knew how I was getting to and from the airport. 

Exploring Nassau Outside of the Resort 

Even though Hotel Riu Palace Paradise Island was beautiful, I didn’t want my entire trip to consist of sitting at the resort. 

This was my first solo trip to the Bahamas, and I wanted to actually experience Nassau.

I booked two different tours through Viator. One was a walking food tour, and the other was a tour by car/van. 

I really liked doing both because they gave me two completely different experiences. 

The walking tour allowed me to explore Nassau on foot, experience the atmosphere of the city and try some local food. The van tour allowed me to cover more ground and see some of the major sights without having to worry about driving or figuring out transportation myself. 

For a first-time visitor, I think doing a tour is a great way to get familiar with Nassau. 

My Nassau Walking Food Tour 

One of the activities I knew I wanted to do was a food tour. 

I’m a big believer that food is part of the travel experience. You can look at beautiful beaches and take pictures all day, but trying local food gives you another way to experience the culture. 

The walking food tour gave me an opportunity to explore Nassau while learning more about Bahamian food and culture. 

And yes, I tried conch! 

I’m going to be honest: the conch was chewy, and it wasn’t my favorite. 😂 

But even though I didn’t fall in love with it, I still think trying conch is a must when visiting the Bahamas. It’s one of the foods the country is known for, so I wanted to be able to say that I actually tried it. 

Would I order it again? Probably not. 

Am I glad I tried it? Absolutely! 

That’s one of my favorite things about traveling. Sometimes you’ll discover a new favorite food, and other times you’ll realize something just isn’t for you. Either way, it’s part of the experience.  Walking Tour Here!

Exploring Nassau by Vehicle 

My second tour was by car/van, and I really enjoyed seeing Nassau this way because we were able to cover more ground. 

Instead of spending the entire day walking around trying to figure out where everything was, I could sit back and take in the sights. 

One of the places I visited was the Queen’s Staircase, which was definitely one of the places I wanted to see while I was in Nassau. 

Queen’s Staircase 

The Queen’s Staircase is one of Nassau’s most recognizable historic landmarks. 

The staircase consists of 65 visible steps carved out of limestone and is surrounded by lush tropical greenery. It was built by enslaved people between 1793 and 1794 and was created to provide access to Fort Fincastle. 

Walking through the staircase was one of those moments where I was reminded that Nassau isn’t just beautiful beaches and resorts. There is a lot of history throughout the city. 

It’s also a really beautiful place to take pictures. 

If you’re visiting Nassau for the first time on a solo trip to the Bahamas, I definitely think Queen’s Staircase should be on your list.

My Experience as a Woman Traveling Alone 

I want to be honest about another part of my experience because this was my first solo international trip, and I think it’s important for other women to know what they may encounter. 

I experienced quite a bit of catcalling and unwanted attention from men while I was out exploring Nassau. 

And before anyone asks, yes, I was dressed appropriately. 

It happened often enough that there were times when I felt uncomfortable simply walking around and exploring by myself. 

At one point, one of my tour guides actually had to tell a man to leave me alone. I appreciated that because it showed me that I wasn’t imagining the behavior or being overly sensitive about it. The interaction was genuinely uncomfortable. 

I also experienced something similar when I went to the beach outside of my hotel. 

A man approached me and started asking me personal questions, including who I was with and whether I was staying at the hotel. He wanted to know more about me and my situation, and because I was traveling alone, it immediately made me uncomfortable. 

That experience really made me think about how important it is to protect your personal information when you’re traveling alone. 

A Solo Travel Safety Tip for Women 

I don’t want my experience to put a negative light on the Bahamas because I genuinely enjoyed my trip. I met nice people, had wonderful experiences, enjoyed my resort and would absolutely return. 

But I also want to be honest with other women. 

If you’re traveling alone, you do not have to tell strangers that you’re alone. 

If someone asks who you’re traveling with, you can simply say you’re meeting friends or traveling with a group. 

You don’t need to give someone your real name. 

You don’t need to tell someone what hotel you’re staying at. 

You don’t need to tell someone what floor you’re on. 

And you definitely don’t need to tell a stranger your room number. 

Your safety is more important than being polite. 

I would also recommend avoiding wandering around unfamiliar areas alone at night, especially if you don’t know the area well. 

During the daytime, I enjoyed getting out and exploring, but there were definitely moments when I wished I could walk around without being constantly approached. 

At the same time, I want to make a distinction between the different types of attention I received. 

Some of the hotel staff members were flirtatious and would simply give me compliments, such as telling me I was beautiful. Those interactions didn’t make me feel unsafe. 

For me, the uncomfortable part was the repeated catcalling and strangers approaching me with personal questions when I was clearly by myself. 

So if you’re a woman planning a solo trip to Nassau, enjoy yourself, but stay aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. 

More Things to Do in Nassau, Bahamas 

If you’re planning a trip to Nassau, don’t feel like you have to spend your entire vacation at your resort. 

There are plenty of things to see and do around the island. 

Queen’s Staircase 

As I mentioned, this should definitely be on your list if you’re interested in Nassau’s history and want a beautiful place to explore and take pictures. 

Fort Fincastle 

Fort Fincastle is located near Queen’s Staircase and is another great stop if you’re exploring Nassau’s historic sites. 

You can combine the two during the same outing instead of making separate trips. 

Downtown Nassau 

Spend some time walking around downtown Nassau and taking in the colorful buildings, shops, restaurants and historic sites. 

This is also a good area to explore if you want to get away from the resort atmosphere and experience more of the city. 

Nassau Straw Market 

If you’re looking for souvenirs, the Straw Market is worth checking out. 

It’s a popular place to shop for handmade items, souvenirs and gifts to take home. 

Just remember to be comfortable negotiating prices when shopping for certain items. 

Arawak Cay and Fish Fry 

If you want to experience more local Bahamian food, check out Arawak Cay, also known as the Fish Fry. 

This is a great place to try local dishes and get a different experience from eating at your resort. 

And if you haven’t tried conch yet, this is another opportunity to give it a try! 

Junkanoo Beach 

If you’re looking for a beach closer to downtown Nassau, Junkanoo Beach is a popular option. 

It’s convenient for travelers who want to combine sightseeing and beach time without spending the entire day at their resort. 

Fort Charlotte 

Fort Charlotte is another historic attraction to add to your itinerary if you enjoy learning about the history of the Bahamas. 

It’s one of the larger historic forts in Nassau and gives visitors another opportunity to see a different side of the island. 

Parliament Square 

Parliament Square is another spot worth seeing while you’re exploring downtown Nassau. 

The colorful colonial-style buildings make it a great photo stop and give you a glimpse into the country’s history and government. 

Government House 

Government House is another historic landmark you can add to your sightseeing itinerary. 

Even if you’re just passing through the area, it’s worth seeing while you’re exploring the historic side of Nassau. 

Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Centre 

If you’re traveling with family or simply love animals, Ardastra Gardens is another option to consider. 

It’s a nice change of pace if you’ve already spent plenty of time at the beach. 

National Art Gallery of The Bahamas 

For travelers interested in art and culture, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is another place to consider adding to your itinerary. 

It’s a great way to see another side of Bahamian culture beyond the beaches and resorts. 

My Advice for a First Trip to Nassau 

If this is your first trip to Nassau, my biggest recommendation is don’t spend the entire vacation inside your resort. 

The resort may be beautiful, and you should absolutely enjoy it, but make time to experience the destination too. 

• Take a food tour. 
• Try conch. 
• Visit Queen’s Staircase. 
• Explore Fort Fincastle. 
• Walk around downtown Nassau. 
• Visit the Straw Market. 
• Try local food at Arawak Cay. 
• Spend some time at the beach. 
• Take a sightseeing tour. 

And most importantly, give yourself the opportunity to see what Nassau is actually like beyond the resort. 

Would I Go Back to The Bahamas? 

The Bahamas was absolutely amazing, and I’d return to Riu Palace Paradise Island again. That said, I’d prefer to explore other locations to compare. For solo travelers, this hotel is a perfect first stop on a solo trip to the Bahamas, but I would recommend taking a few precautions. I’d suggest purchasing a door stopper for added security and being mindful of your surroundings, especially when traveling alone. 

Looking back, I’m really proud of myself for taking this trip. 

This wasn’t just a vacation. It was my first solo trip, and I planned the entire thing myself. 

I booked my resort, arranged my transportation, booked my tours and explored another country on my own. 

Was everything perfect? No. 

Did I have moments where I felt uncomfortable? Yes. 

But did I have an amazing birthday and create memories that I’ll never forget? 

Absolutely. 

My first solo trip to the Bahamas taught me that traveling alone doesn’t mean you have to be lonely. You can enjoy your own company, meet new people, try new foods, explore somewhere completely different and still make the trip exactly what you want it to be. 

And for my 30th birthday?
